Message in a Bottle
January 2020

Here at Tacoma Boat Builders we’ve begun our year thinking about our hopes and aspirations for the year to come and filled with gratitude for everyone who makes the boat shop tick. 2020 is off to a great start for us and we wish the same for you! From our home to yours, may the year to come be happy and productive! In this edition, we feature some exciting additions and improvements that will all contribute to offering great mentoring programs for the youth of Tacoma and Pierce County.
TBB is curious: What are your goals, hopes, and aspirations for TBB in the 2020 year?  Please take the time to fill out the anonymous survey provided below.

Upgrading BIG!
Thanks to the funding allocated by Former Pierce County Councilmember
Thanks to the funding provided by the Pierce County Council in 2019, Tacoma Boat Builders underwent an extreme safety and security upgrade!  The shop and offices have new LED lighting, the power access in the shop has been augmented to support new equipment, and we are more accessible for folks with disabilities by adding a ramp out front and changing the bathroom to accommodate their needs. In addition to all of that, TBB teamed up with some really great folks to bring our secure internet practices up to enterprise standards.

Huge shout outs go to Kent Rivers and his crew from Allied Electric Corporation, Mike Ward and his crew from Ward Construction LLC, and Greg Butler, Nate Walters and their colleagues from UWT's Cybersecurity and Leadership program for all of their help!

New Year, New Board Members

Did you know? Tacoma Boat Builders welcomed FOUR new members to the Board of Directors!  New Board Members means more voice on innovative and diverse ideas for essentials such as strategic planning and policy development for the mission of TBB.  How exciting, right?!

Without further ado, TBB welcomes Janece Levien, Bob Mack, Ed Raisl, and Ken Lazarus! In the months to come, you can look forward to learning more about them.  And, just so you know, there is still an open seat on the Board.  Let us know if you are interested!
And as you may recall, TBB not only has a bigger Board but a bigger staff too!  At the start of 2019, TBB had three full-time and one part-time.  Now TBB has FOUR full-time and TWO part-time staff.  In 2020, TBB is planning to expand even more.
THANKS to all of the grant makers in the Tacoma Boat Builders community! Your support of over $150,000 made all the difference in 2019.  Thank you for continuing to support much-needed programming for the youth of Pierce County!

Unsung Hero Award Honoree Paul Birkey
Presented by LeRoy Jewelers
Tacoma has something so special! People here choose to embrace community and make a difference, it’s a Can Do, Get ‘er Done kind of town. For the last eight years, LeRoy Jewelers has honored members of the community who give back.  This year, TBB's very own Paul Birkey was double nominated. One of his nominators was 2018's Unsung Hero Award Winner, Dean Burke, Tacoma South Sound Sports Commission Executive Director.  Isn't it cool being a part of a community such as this one?
And always remember, Together, we are enriching lives through craftsmanship for Pierce County’s youth.

With much gratitude,
The Boat Shop Crew
