2018 was an incredible year for Circulate Capital and the challenge of plastic waste overall. Joining several other exciting and powerful initiatives, we launched Circulate Capital in July and The Incubator Network by Circulate Capital and SecondMuse at the G7 Summit in Canada in October. Then, at Our Ocean in Bali in October, we announced more than $100 million to invest in solutions to the ocean plastic pollution problem in South and Southeast Asia.
Our team and partners worked tirelessly to bring Circulate Capital to life in 2018. And, as we look forward to 2019, we anticipate the following developments:
Circulate Capital and its partners will focus on making investments to fund solutions and innovators working on the front lines preventing plastic pollution in South and Southeast Asia. We will also begin to catalyze the capital funding needed to solve this problem.
We will not be alone. In 2019, we expect larger investment and more money committed to those same entrepreneurs and innovators.
We will recognize that the problem extends beyond money. Considerable activity is expected from the public and non-profit sectors as they begin implementing plans that have been in development over the last year.
The Circulate Capital team and I look forward to 2019 with a tremendous amount of hope for the future and to sharing more progress soon.
As we take a moment to reflect, we're grateful for our supporters who are truly committed to this effort. Thank you.
We are also grateful to our incredible advisors like Jenna Jambeck, who provided the Royal Statistical Society's statistic of the year for 2018 -- that 90.5% of plastic waste has never been recycled. This is a percentage we intend to change.
The Circulate Initiative is an independent charitable organization working in partnership with philanthropic, government, and corporate funders brought to you by the same team that created Circulate Capital.
If you're a civil society leader, passionate about practical and multidisciplinary solutions to the challenges presented by ocean plastic pollution and waste in the South and Southeast Asia region, we'd love to talk to you about this exciting leadership role.
Based in Singapore, you will lead the newly created not-for-profit Circulate Initiative - whose mission is to incubate, amplify, and measure the impact of projects that prevent ocean plastic and advance the circular economy.
