American(s) in Paris

This weekend brought my first visitors to Paris!! Peter planned a quick vacation & Frankie hopped on a last minute plane by a happy coincidence. This weekend has been too good to be real, friends -- and it's only just begun.

Separate thing: the above picture is a ceiling fresco in the Louvre by CY TWOMBLY. Can you believe this place?

Centre Pompidou
This picture is me freaking out to finally have some Ithaca people back in my life!! Peter, Frankie (an honorary Ithaca person) and I met up with my roommate at the Centre Pompidou, a modern art museum here in Paris. In addition to the artwork, the view of the city -- as you can see -- is absolutely amazing. From here you can see the Sacre Coeur, the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame. Definite must see if you find yourself in this beautiful place.

Centre Pompidou, continuted

So here I am actually in the Pompidou Center, posing with a Mondrian original. I recreated his work for my very first art project in 1st grade, and it felt absolutely surreal to be standing in front of it in real life. I don't think my elementary school self would have believed this moment, but I do know she'd be thrilled.

Sainte-Chapelle

For my architecture class this week we have to sketch a gothic-style building, and I chose this beauty called the Sainte-Chapelle. During the time period that it was erected, life was dull and dark; churches were meant to be a stunning contrast to the every day, and were built as tall as possible so as to be closer to heaven. Seeing these stained glass windows for the first time literally took my breath away, so I can only imagine how ancient peoples reacted (or focused on their worship).

More art!!!!!!

Andddd finally this picture was taken in Montmartre. This hill in the 18th district has another stunning view of the city, and is known for the artists who frequent the main square. I was so struck by their talent and love for creativity that I sat for about an hour just admiring the way their hands moved across the canvas with such familiarity. This may be my favorite place (so far) in Paris.

That's it for this week, friends!! It's been a great one. As always, thanks for reading & I'd love to hear from you. How's your Saturday going? Do you care about art history? When is the last time you tried something new? XOXO, Abby
