Safety Updates from the Principal

The safety of RCE students remains one of our top priorities.  At the beginning of every school year, all staff are trained on how to respond in the event of an emergency situation.  We have already had 1 fire evacuation drills, a Lock Down drill, and a chemical shelter in place.  Our students did a great job of following directions immediately and exiting the building when directed.  It is important for our students to understand the importance for these drills.  Therefore, the day before the first time these drills are practiced, we talk to students the procedures and the reasons for these drills.  If you ever need more information about these procedures, don’t hesitate to contact us.
In the past couple of weeks, we have had wasps migrating through the Spring Branch area.  Unfortunately, we have had 3 students that were stung. All of these students made quick recoveries.  We have made district personnel aware and numerous building and grounds employees have come over in an effort to help with pest control.  The District is following all SBISD policies and procedures as governed by the Texas Department of Agriculture.  Students with insect allergies have been staying in during recess for alternative activities.  We realize that students need time for fresh air and exercise.  We monitor daily the areas that students need to avoid.  I will keep you posted on any additional updates.  In the past few days, the number of wasps appears to be decreasing due to the rainy weather.  You can call the school if you have further questions.
Because the temperatures still remain in the 90’s – 100, we have been closely monitoring the heat index before students go out to recess.  Our nurses have kept us informed of how to access this information on a daily basis.  If the heat index is over 101 degrees all health fitness classes and recess are held inside.

Notes From the Nurse
We will be conducting vision and hearing screening over the next two weeks starting on Sept 10 for our RCE PreK, Kinder, 1st, 3rd and 5th graders. We will also screen new RCE 2nd and 4th graders.

Please remember to send your child to school WITH their glasses or contact lenses during this time. We need many volunteers to help us with our state’s required screenings. If you're able to volunteer, please visit the Sign-Up Genius link:

Thank you for your time and service for our RCE students!!

Library Links

We are so excited that the Library is already in full swing for the 2018-19 school year. We are looking for volunteers to support the library programs. Please fill out this form to volunteer in the library.

The Birthday Book Club is back at RCE. We are partnering with Usborne books to bring in great books that are special for the Birthday Book Club. Check out this link for the list of books, and fill out this form – so we can get personal information about the Birthday Child. Thank you for supporting the library.

The library is going to have some unique stations this year - we are looking for a few donations: If you have broken small appliances, printers, computers that the students can take apart. We are going to begin creating hats and mats for the homeless...we need bulky yarn (skein will make two hats - so we can take leftover or new) and old t-shirts we can cut up to create the mats. We need adult large and extra-large t-shirts, they can be in non-wearable condition.

Thank you for supporting the Library and its programs.

  1. Science Fair – Our amazing chair for this event is in her last year at RCE.  We are looking for someone that would be willing to “shadow” her this year in order to learn the ropes and take over for her next year.
  2. Red Ribbon Week - The entire week is dedicated to awareness of a drug – free nation.  Last year the theme was that we “socked it to drugs”.  You would help coordinate the daily activities during this week.
Please contact Jenn Terveen at if you have any interest in helping with any of these.
