Welcome to 25,000: your briefing from inside Bellevue Hospital to keep you abreast of what's impacting the lives of the twenty-five thousand children--some of New York City's most at-risk youth--who come through our doors every year.

Hi Friend,

March is Child Life Month!

Our specialists help young patients and their families cope with stress, pain, and fear associated with illness and hospitalization. They’re here to help calm anxiety, intervene in crises, and help make managing health challenges a little less scary. In short, they’re heroes who make a huge impact every day here at Bellevue.

Buddy the Service Dog to the Rescue

From Maureen, Weekend Child Life Specialist:

The family of a four-year-old boy was understandably upset watching their child undergo an emergency procedure. I provided support to his parents and friends, escorting them to a private room to wait.

In our conversation, the dad mentioned he loves dogs, so I brought my service dog Buddy to visit the family. The dad spontaneously hugged Buddy and nestled his cheek in Buddy’s fur, a visual indication that dad was finding comfort in Buddy’s presence. He went on to whisper to the dog,
“Don’t worry, my son is strong! He will be just fine.”

I’m glad Buddy and I were there to be a comfort to this family!

Children of Bellevue is 70 this year!

For 70 years, weve been advocating and innovating for children at Bellevue to provide more than medicine to help them thrive!
