FAHASS Newsletter - 2nd Quarter 2020

From the Executive Director

Spring fever is in full effect and I couldn’t be more proud of my FAHASS family! They have been hard at work developing innovative strategies and events to serve and engage our community while still observing physical distancing during this coronavirus pandemic. Although we take this virus very seriously, we can’t let it stop or even slow down our mission: To positively impact individual and community health. As the unemployment rate rises, and the future is filled with uncertainty, FAHASS remains a stabilizing and dependable foundation for our clients and the community we serve. We hope that you follow us on our social media platforms, and be sure to come out and support us at all of the events we have planned for the Spring and Summer. Until then, stay safe, stay healthy, and enjoy life!

FAHASS in the Community

In April, FAHASS was a lucky recipient of a community wide collaborative food donation. Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) coordinated an effort that provided food for a variety of groups, both big and small, across the Fredericksburg region - to include FAHASS. Food had been donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints and organized for distribution at a local HDT warehouse. Because of this donation, we were able to provide food for over 30 of our clients’ families who have been struggling to make ends meet. We are so lucky to live in a place with such a strong knit community of partners, all focused on doing the best we can for those in need!
Gwyneth's Gift Foundation logoA huge THANK YOU to local non-profit, Gwyneth's Gift Foundation, for selecting FAHASS as the recipient of their AED placement in the month of April. Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation works to raise community and national awareness regarding the education of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Their AED program places life-saving AED devices in schools and other public facilities. They also provide training in proper CPR and AED use throughout the community. FAHASS has placed the AED in our Mosaic Care Center and we look forward to a future training session with the experienced staff at Gwyneth's Gift Foundation!
Special thanks to the Kent Richard Hofmann Foundation for their recent grant award towards our mobile testing vehicle capabilities. One of the ways that FAHASS works to positively impact individual and community health is through our rural outreach. Many of the communities FAHASS serves face difficulty accessing care due to location. Resources and medical access can be more scarce in rural locations so FAHASS is committed to increasing our reach to these under-served locations. This grant will assist us in providing services to the more rural populations across Central Virginia.
Welcome our newest Board Member - Ernisha Hall
Ernisha is a leader and business mentor in her community, truly believing that “we rise by lifting others”. Originally from New York City, Ernisha has always had a passion for helping others. She has a BA in Forensic Psychology, a Master’s in Business (MBA), and a Master’s in Social Work (MSW), each degree preparing for the position she holds today. Ernisha's goal was to find a career path that would help at risk or underserved populations of people. Currently she and her wife are raising their 16-year-old daughter in Fredericksburg, VA, while running a successful business, NIRAY LLC and a non-profit organization, VA Black Business Directory (VABBD).

Ernisha and Tracey Hall established NIRAY LLC in 2018; a website, graphic design, and branding company. The mission of NIRAY is to elevate small, minority owned businesses by designing professional, high-quality marketing products that build brand awareness and reputation to increase their revenue and business longevity. Since establishing NIRAY, Ernisha and Tracey have secured more than 200 clients to date throughout the United States, becoming one of the top-rated graphic design companies in the area. NIRAY LLC was awarded Business Start-Up of the Year and Mentor of the Year by the Greater Fredericksburg Regional Black Chamber of Commerce.

Along with NIRAY, Ernisha is the co-founder and Executive Director of the VA Black Business Directory (VABBD) and Black DMV Magazine. Co-leading with Tracey and three successful business owners in the Fredericksburg region, they work to fulfill the mission of the VABBD: to bridge the gap in wealth by connecting minority-owned businesses to consumers, creating networking initiatives, providing educational opportunities, and promoting community collaboration.

Program Highlights
In the world of HIV treatment and prevention, a new approach to care has recently taken hold in the effort to end the HIV epidemic, referred to as status neutral. This approach builds on previous prevention and care best practices and is rooted in steps that have proven successful in keeping individuals engaged in care in the past. The status neutral approach incorporates both people living with HIV and those at risk, proposing the same general approach for engagement, regardless of an individual's HIV status.

By now, you may be familiar with our Got5 initiative, which is based on this status neutral approach. This initiative is designed, through education, to challenge the social, cultural, and economic disparities known to negatively impact the health outcomes of minorities.
Over the past year, FAHASS has worked to create innovative new programming and events (A Woman's Worth, Youth Empowerment Summit, Brother2Brother, etc.) to reach at risk populations focusing on the 5 Pillars of the Got5 program - Find. Teach. Test. Link. Keep. These pillars focus on finding people in need of care, teaching them about HIV prevention and resources, testing individuals to ensure everyone knows their status, linking individuals to the care they need, and keeping them engaged with services to better their lives and health outcomes. Check out our recent Prevention Corner videos on Facebook to learn more!
