RACING: Canada Cup/UCI Jr Series
The last race block has had its ups and downs as most seasons do. Emily Unterberger claimed 2nd in the Elite women's race at the Mont Tremblant Canada Cup and moved into the Leader's jersey yeah!, while Elyse Nieuwold also landed on the podium in 4th. However, Emily had a crash during the race in the slick conditions which led to a persistent headache the following week and she had to pull the plug on the rest of the race block. Emily returned to BC early and has been a trouper but quite frustrated with the slow progress of concussion rehab. We hope to have her back shredding soon, but head health comes first.
Elyse followed up her ride in Mont Tremblant with two 9th places finishes at the following two Canada Cups. A little disappointed with the result, she had no disappointment in the courses and increased level of competition seen at these events.
Holden saw consistent progression over the three week block, racing to 9th, 8th and then 6th at Tremblant, Baie-St-Paul and Sherbrooke Canada Cups with increasing depth of competition at each with racers returning from the European Canada Cups for the last two. He is super happy with his progression and sensations on the bike.
Emily Johnston, seeking greater competition in the junior women's field decided to head to Europe to follow the UCI Jr Series. It was a great decision as the level of competition in Europe is top notch and she got to ride on the World Cup tracks the same weekend as the Elites and not only race but watch the Elite events as well. Emily took 7th in Albstadt and 13th in Czech and then returned to Canada for the Sherbrooke Canada Cup where she took a convincing win.
All of the riders are now in a rebuild training phase after 3 weeks on the road racing and resting. They will be back in action at the Whistler Canada Cup on June 22nd. We would like to thank KazLaw Injury lawyers for their travel grant assistance.
-Thanks also to Cycling Canada's Tara Lazarski for the medical support throughout Emily Unterberger's return to training. We strongly encourage everyone to get baseline concussion testing done so you know your normal and when more rest is needed after a crash.-
