Happy new year from the Centre for Digital Life Norway! – message from the centre leaders

Trygve Brautaset and Kam Sripada

2022 marks DLN’s 7th year and we are preparing for a busy year ahead. DLN is pleased to announce the first-ever DLN FAIR data award, to highlight outstanding examples of life science researchers in Norway who have managed their data with FAIR principles. There is still time to apply, so send us your FAIR datasets by 15 January! Our call for transdisciplinary paper of the year 2021 is also open until 28 Feb (details below).
Our popular industry internship is back for a 3rd year! This program has received enthusiastic feedback so far and we welcome PhD students who are in DLN projects or are DLN Research School members to learn about opportunities in biotechnology outside academia.
In the new year, we aim to strengthen the Digital Life Norway network of projects and encourage you to contact our team whenever we can be of support. We look forward to a 2022 that is flexible, collaborative, and optimistic.

OxyMod research gives new opportunities for recirculating plastics

Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenases (LPMOs) are unique mono-copper enzymes evolved to act on the surfaces of insoluble crystalline polysaccharides, such as cellulose. Ever since their discovery in 2010, it has been speculated whether these unique enzymes could act on, or be engineered to act on, other surfaces, including plastics.

Thanks to ten years of fundamental and applied research on LPMOs and recent insights generated in Digital Life’s OxyMod project, we now have a knowledge base that allows us to explore and evolve these enzymes for plastic recycling.
