September 22 | 4:00 pm ET

Female and minority scientists in the U.S. continue to face harassment, gender and racial bias and institutional discrimination at different stages in their careers. The eye-opening documentary “Picture a Scientist” paints a real-life portrait of these struggles through personal stories and data. The film seeks to raise visibility around the critical issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in science and challenge viewers to move toward change. Watch the documentary and then join a panel of ACSM members
to expand the conversation more broadly.

Hilliard Discussion: Does Vigorous Exercise Suppress Immune Functioning?

September 29 | 7:00–8:30 pm CT

You’re invited to the next debate in the Hilliard Discussion series, sponsored by the Sydney and JL Huffines Institute of Sports Medicine and Human Performance at Texas A&M University.  This free, online debate series with audience participation argues cutting edge topics in Sports Medicine and Human Performance.

Given the concern about immune functioning over the past two years, there is great interest in whether exercise strengthens or weakens immune functioning.  This debate will focus on the long-running hypothesis that vigorous exercise actually suppresses immune functioning. Our speakers for the debate are Dr. David Nieman, Appalachian State University and  Dr. Emily LaVoy, University of Houston.

ACSM Panel Discussion: HIIT for Chronic Disease

October 5 | 6:00 - 8:00 pm ET
The popularity and widespread utilization of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is well known in healthy populations. Conversely, HIIT is now beginning to emerge as a viable option for therapeutic exercise for those with chronic disease. However, questions remain to its safety, applicability and implementation strategies within an exercise program.
In this panel discussion, free to join for ACSM members, attendees will be able to interact and ask questions directly with the authors of several feature articles published in the special themed issue of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal®. Simply register for the event, download your complimentary articles from your registration follow-up email, and bring your questions to the event to get the answers to them and many others.
