The Clean Power Alliance Family Remembers the Life and Legacy of Carmen Ramirez

It is with heavy hearts that we reflect on the recent passing of Carmen Ramirez, who served as a member of the CPA Board of Directors, Chair of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, and was a beloved longtime Oxnard community activist.
The sadness and shock of her passing is still with us, but we are comforted by memories of Carmen’s graciousness and love for her community along with her professional accomplishments that were too numerous to count.
With her extensive track record as an environmental justice leader and member of the Oxnard City Council, Carmen spearheaded efforts to halt construction of an Liquified Natural Gas terminal and the proposed Puente Power Plant, shutter the Ormand Beach Power Plant, and clean up a Superfund metal recycling site, all of which are, or were to be, near the La Colonia neighborhood she represented. Later she led the effort to have Oxnard join CPA and be one of the first cities to start CPA service with 100% renewable energy.
Building on all her energy knowledge and passion for fighting climate change, Carmen was the inaugural chair of CPA’s Energy Committee and stayed an engaged member of the committee when she became an alternate board member following her election in November 2020 as the first Latina to serve on the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. In addition to her work on the Energy Committee, she always advocated for CPA staff’s well-being, especially in our grueling start-up years, constantly checking in on our team and sending messages of goodwill that were always well received.

We extend our condolences to Carmen’s family and friends as well as the communities she tirelessly served. Her kindness, generosity and leadership will continue to resonate throughout our entire organization.

Power Grid Summer Reliability Strengthened with New Luna
Battery Storage Facility

The 100 MW/400 MWh Luna Battery Storage Project is now operational and providing energy to CPA customers while strengthening grid reliability. This new standalone energy storage resource serves as an essential component of CPA’s renewable energy strategy and as a key offering to Los Angeles County and Ventura County customers by enabling the power grid to match natural changes in the supply and demand of electricity, guarding against potential grid overloads.

LACI and CPA Expand Workforce Partnership

The workforce development partnership between CPA and the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) continued this month as two interns began a new three-month learning experience at CPA. CPA was a $50,000 sponsor of LACI’s inaugural microgrid maintenance training fellowship in the spring. Now, graduates from that program will get more real-world experience working alongside our clean energy professionals.  CPA welcomes interns Christy Amezcua and Jason Hector to our team.

Meet the Staff - Gabby Monzon

Tell us about your background.

Before joining CPA, I was the Deputy City Clerk at Culver City, where I focused on voter outreach and education initiatives, managed the public records request program, and oversaw the daily operations of the City Clerk’s Office.

Prior to that, I worked in the clerk’s office at several public agencies where I also assisted in municipal elections, administered records management, and monitored Brown Act compliance.

What responsibilities do you have here at Clean Power Alliance?

I am primarily responsible for coordinating our Board of Directors and committee meetings and ensuring that those meetings are accessible to the public.  I work closely with our excellent staff to gather reports and post agendas in accordance with legal deadlines to ensure that our Board members receive the information they need to make important decisions about the organization.

What are you most proud of in working here at CPA?

I am most proud of the relationships I have built here at CPA, not only with our staff, but all our Board members who dedicate their time to ensuring that CPA continues to deliver quality service and affordable clean energy to all customers.
