Despite some breezy conditions… Thursday’s sojourn to Valkaria (X59) was just about PERFECT! Right out of the gate, I have to thank Old Farts Frank “Shameless” Gallagher and Christopher “Kongo” Niles, for all the legwork in putting this one together. Frank founded, and Kongo now operates, the Valkaria Aero Club. It is a unique shared ownership organization that operates their own aircraft, provides members with instruction and tries to keep it all on the fun side with lots of club functions. Several Aero Club members pitched in to help with parking, set up, clean up, serving… etc. Thanks to all of them, along with my wife Terese, Frank’s better half Christine and the paid staff at the airport! Everything went very smoothly. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
A special thanks to Old Fart Wayne Nagy for the use of an electric folding bike that he brought along in his vintage Cessna 310. The tiny thing saved me lots of huffing and puffing up and down the expansive ramp while getting my recap photos. Yes, I am aware of how goofy I looked on the little thing!
Oh, and the new terminal building at X59 is incredible! What a perfect venue for a function like ours!!! The tables and chairs were set up on the expansive second level patio. Old Farts could enjoy their food while basking in the warm south Florida weather and taking in the activity on the ramp.
As an added bonus, at a little after 1:00, there was a SpaceX launch from “The Cape”, just twenty five miles up the coast. Many Old Farts hung around to watch. Kongo’s wife is a launch engineer for SpaceX. Not sure if she had anything to do with the timing. Probably not, as she was busy helping my wife in the serving line.
About 45 aircraft were in my count. They included four helicopters (three turbines), , three twins, Manual Borrero’s awesome Cirrus Vision Jet, and Dave & Jeanne Allen’s fabulous 1932 Cabin Waco. As always… a huge mix of aircraft to peruse and enjoy!
The food was catered from Sonny’s BBQ, and was quite good. I’m pleased to announce that Frank and Kongo came out in the black, financially, after all was said and done. That’s always a worry when we have to commit to catering.
Sooooo…. it was about eighty degrees, the sun was shining, the breeze was right down the runway, a nice crowd turned out, there was a space launch to watch and we didn’t lose money!!! How do you top that??? Thanks again to all who pitched in to make this one possible… and to all you Old Farts for making our group the fun little miracle that it is!
Old Fart quote of the day… “I really like flying to these things. Better than beating off alligators with a nine iron!” Love it!
Next week, Thursday, February 10, we are heading to Tampa North Aero Park (X39). Look for an invite with details in your email on Sunday or Monday.
Keep the Shiny Side Up!
Old Fart Roger
