Old Farts
Arcadia Fish Fry Recap

From Thursday, April 14th, 2022…

Old Farts...

Right off the top… I have to throw out a huge “Thank You” to the fine folks at EAA Chapter 66 for their efforts on Thursday!!! The food was really, really good. What a great venue for us Old Farts. They repeatedly thanked me for organizing this event??? All I did was send out a couple emails. They deserve all the credit! Great Job!!!

Arcadia Airport Manager Shelley Peacock and her crew also deserve a big pat on the back. Coffee and donuts, help with fueling, help with parking, a fuel discount and the genuine hospitality… always make wish Arcadia was my home airport! It certainly feels like “Home”, every time I visit. Shelley’s boss, the Arcadia City Manger was in attendance. I caught up with them while they were taking a little golf cart tour. From our conversation, I think he knows what a treasure he has in Shelley. I certainly hope so!

I count 54 Old Fart aircraft in my photos. The EAA folks tell me they served just shy of 100 meals. They were delighted with the turnout, and were able to use the product left over from an earlier fundraising fish fry that was hampered by weather. Much of the food would have gone to waste, had it not been for this event. Old Farts to the rescue!

As always, we had a wonderfully mixed array of aircraft in attendance. Cubs to twins and choppers to STOL aircraft. It’s fun to cruise the ramp… just to gawk at the variety.

Next week, April 21st is another trip to Avon Park (KAVO) and the wonderful buffet at the historic Hotel Jacaranda. We visited there early in our season, but this destination is well worth a second time around!!! Look for an invite out this weekend with details, and likely an RSVP request to compile an approximate number for our planning.

I’ve included a little photo collage of my Stearman and an award received at last week’s Sun N Fun event. Terese and I camped all week in the Vintage Aircraft area, and had the plane judged. We came away with the “Outstanding Custom Antique” award. Fortunately, “Team Waldo” members Lisa Heidinger and Rob “Waldo Wright” Lock were on hand Saturday to accept the award with me. The old Stearman underwent restoration between August 2020 and June of 2021.

Ed and Marcia Wilsey won Grand Champion Warbird with their newly restored Curtis P-40 Warhawk. Incredible!!! I can’t wait for this one to show up at a Thursday Old Fart $100 hamburger event! Other Old Farts won awards. Barry Holtz with his Grumman Widgeon and David Taisch’s Lake Buccaneer. Luis Villar and Hans Nordsiek also won awards with their beautiful Stearman biplanes. I’m working from memory here. Please let me know if I missed acknowledging other Old Fart award winners. (Scroll to the end of the photos for these collages.)

That’s about it for this week. Keep the shiny side up!!!

Old Fart Roger

This week’s favorite was a pretty easy choice. Old Fart Charlie Turner showed up with a brand new ride. This “Baby Birddog” just looks like “Fun”. It is basically a 1964 (I think) Cessna 150… with rear windows but still a straight tail. Lowe Aero Services converted it to a taildragger and came up with the mock L-19 Birddog paint scheme. The aircraft still sports the O-200 engine. Charlie is a regular attendee. I’m sure we will be seeing this little gem week after week!
