Old Farts
Okeechobee (KOBE) Recap

from Thursday, March 10th, 2022…

Old Farts...

There was a fair amount of nasty weather around south Florida on Thursday. A line of rain, and even thunderstorm activity, was draped across the state. It was not that far north of our destination at Okeechobee (KOBE) and the Landing Strip Cafe. Despite the weather issues, we still had about fifty aircraft show up!

You’ll see photos of 46 here. Our consummate “Early Bird Old Fart” Ed Crouse was climbing out of the pattern as I was arriving around 8:20. There was an Ercoupe flying with him. Those are two that I did not get a photo of. My good friend, Frank Gallagher and Christine showed up later. I did my meet and great, helped push their Citabria back into a spot… then got to chatting and neglected to take a pic. That makes 49. You have to know the errant “Number 50” was there somewhere… I just didn’t get a photo.

As a side note, I was happily cruising the ramp and taking pics on my little Segway for the first hour, or so. Then a line boy nicely asked that I not use it. He cited rules and liability issues. That’s twice now, that I’ve had my wings clipped. Someone jokingly suggested I get some sort of “Handicap License”, to sidestep these regulations. I quipped back, “My Handicaps should be apparent!”

Our Okeechobee visit generated three new members. I approached people gassing up, or just there for lunch, who were not Old Farts… but are now! The membership list just keeps growing.

You'll see a pic of Old Fart David Zmrzel (yes, he needs to buy a vowel) who showed up with three nicely dressed ladies in his Piper Cherokee. Something to do with International Women’s Day… I guess??? It didn’t take much encouragement for me to squeeze in for a pic with Dave’s guests.

Pat and Dick Shapiro arrived in their distinctive red and cream Beech Sundowner… with a “Snoopy” graphic on the fuselage. Old Fart regulars, they have been absent so far this season. A new hip for Pat and a new heart valve for Dick, have kept them sidelined. It was great to see them back!!!

It was a fun day!!! I was there, doing my thing for nearly six hours. Yes, I had breakfast… and lunch! Yetta, my contact at the Landing Strip Cafe, thanked me profusely for bringing the Old Farts in. There was a  period when folks had to wait a short time for a table, but again… the staff did an incredible job of getting us all in and out. And, the food is really quite good! We likely added 100 meals to their normal Thursday clientele. Some of us even ate twice!

At the end of my photos, you’ll see a two frame comparison of Old Fart Gary West and Clint Eastwood. The photo of Gary is from yesterday. Clint came from the internet. As I was going through my photos, the shot of Gary struck me as looking very familiar??? It dawned on me that he looked a lot like Clint Eastwood. Trust me, I’ve known Gary for a long time, and I’ve never confused him with a movie star! Still, this particular photo made me think of old “Dirty Harry” himself! What do y’all think??? “Don’t let the Old Man In”.

You’ll see an invite to an upcoming EAA fish fry at Arcadia Municipal at the end of this post. Also, I’ve again added the instructions for ordering Old Farts Flying Club gear from our store at the Queensbury Shirt, Co.

That’s about a wrap. Next week is Grassroots. Watch for an update on that, sometime this weekend.

Keep the Shiny Side Up!

Old Fart Roger

When an Old Fart shows up in an Oshkosh Award Winner… it pretty much follows that it should be my, “This Week’s Favorite”. Roy Cook arrived in his stunningly restored Piper Super Cub. Roy and Christina showed the 1959 PA-18 at Oshkosh last summer, and came away with the coveted vintage category, “Preservation Award - Outstanding in Type”. Congratulations to Roy and Christina!!! And thanks for sharing!!!
