Old Farts
Immokalee Recap

Old Farts...

The weather gods threw a wrench in the works for yesterday’s Old Fart visit to Immokalee. Morning fog blanketed south Florida on Thursday. It was forecast to burn off by 10:00, but I wasn’t able to leave FD88 until 11:00. And, I fancy myself a pretty good “scud runner”. A few filed and came in via instruments. Fred Stucklen and Gary West are two that I heard on radio doing just that.

Consequently, our turnout was about seventeen or eighteen aircraft. Seven or eight Old Farts drove, to serve as shuttles. Add them, and we had a respectable number. I am almost certain I’m missing one or two, but I want to thank our drivers… Sanford and Diane Reim, John Hawkins, Martin Jeliffe, Dom, Eric Delawder, David Griffiths, Dick Smith and Dale Schoeneman. Thanks SOOOOOO… much from all of us who counted on you. A special thanks to Sanford and Diane, as they were my designated “early bird” drivers and were on station at 7:30 a.m.!!!

If you look at my photos, you’ll see some low lying clouds in the background. Evidence of the conditions that kept our numbers down. We had a great time just the same.

There is a new vodka distillery adjacent to the airport. Some of us wandered over for a tour. John Hawkins told me about it. I told him I’d go over for a bottle to give to Old Fart Lisa Heidinger. Lisa enjoys an occasional martini at our house. I soon saw John heading toward my Ercoupe with a couple bottles of hooch from Everglades Distilleries. Merry Christmas Lisa!!!

That’s about a wrap from Immokalee (KIMM). The newly paved north/south runway should be completed early next year. We will have to give this destination another try, and hope for better weather. The food is great, and the staff at the airport was very welcoming!

Next week is a visit to our Old Fart friends at the Wellington Aero Club. Watch for an invite from me, probably on Sunday. Attendees will need to email a copy of your insurance coverage. All you need is the page showing the liability coverage in place. I’ve heard it referred to as the “docs” page. Just take a photo with your phone, and be ready to email it. I’ll have the email address in my invitation.

Keep the Shiny Side Up!

When Old Farts Dave and Jeanne Allen showed up with their stunning 1934 Waco cabin, it just had to be my favorite of the week. The trip down from Grassroots Airpark might have also been the longest distance for Thursday’s attendees. This aircraft was meticulously restored by the Allens, and began making the airshow rounds in 2013. That was the same year Terese and I finished our Howard DGA project. We had a running gag about the Waco always winning Grand Champion and our Howard picking up the scraps. The Allens are great Old Farts, and have hosted us at Grassroots. We are hoping to put together another visit there in the new year.
