066 - Club Newsletter 4th September
Dear members and residents

September is Arbor month which focuses on the planting of trees.  This is an exceptional initiative that is close to my heart and I know, close to the hearts of many of our residents and members due to our deep appreciation of the green belt we live in. Our Estate has a wonderfully diverse environment that we need to preserve and Arbor month reminds and encourages us to do just that.  Please read further along in this newsletter for more details.

From Monday 7th September up to and including Friday 11th September The Lakes will be undergoing Spring Treatment and will therefore be closed for golf. We encourage all walkers, runners, riders, and bird watchers to take advantage of this great opportunity and use The Lakes at any time of day during next week. As we are now in Spring and the days are lengthening it is the perfect opportunity to experience everything The Lakes has to offer.  We will have extended golf hours on The Woods to accommodate golfers. Please click here to find out where and when you can exercise.

Dear members

Spring treatment on The Woods has been completed, including the planting of new grass in a number of areas.  This will take time to take root and, especially with the recent rains we have just had, we will reap the benefits in a few weeks time.

From Monday 7th to 11th September The Lakes will undergo Spring Treatment and will therefore be closed to golf.  But we have extra tee-off times on The Woods for golfers. Please click here to view golf and exercise times.

Please click here for the weekly golf newsletter sent out on Wednesday 2nd September.

See you on the course!

Arbor Month At Mount Edgecombe Country Club
One of the unique characteristics of Mount Edgecombe Country Club is that it is a rich green belt made up of forests and wooded areas. To preserve this precious attribute we need to look after the environment and continually add trees and shrubs to our environment.

This is week is Arbor Week and we are celebrating this worthy cause for the month of September which will culminate in a tree planting ceremony at the end of September  There are several  areas on The Woods and The Lakes that would greatly benefit from additional trees. Among area is the area between holes 5 and 8 and hole 13 around Dumat Dam. On The Lakes on the 14th hole in Pani Forest as well as certain areas identified by Geoff Nichols on The Lakes are in need of trees.

We would really appreciate if every resident - in the spirit of Arbor Week to sponsor one of the Trees recommended by Geoff Nichols, or to pay in a sum of money which will be pooled together to buy bigger, more well-established trees.

Geoff Nichols has suggested the below list of “KZN Coastal Forest” trees as being his choice for a built-up area as most are smallish trees (except the Ficus sur and the Vachellia robusta which need lots of space and are best in common areas and not between homes).

These are also the most productive trees providing flowers and fruit for the various forms of suburban wildlife: (Please
click here for more information on each of the below plants and trees.)
Xylotheca kraussiana
Searsia natalensis
Calpurnia aurea
Maytenus procumbens
Trimeria grandifolia
Ficus sur
Deinbollia oblongifolia
Trema orientalis
Olea woodiana
Acacia robusta now Vachellia robusta
Acacia natalitia or A. karroo now Vachellia natalitia or V. karroo.
Diospyros natalensis
Gymnosporia buxifolia

  • Not to plant trees closer than 5 metres from a road or building.
  • Don’t plant over underground services.
