COLLECT FOR 30-31 MAY 2020                                                           PENTECOST

Holy Father, giver of all good gifts, pour out your Holy Spirit upon your people; that we led by Your holy presence, may be empowered to do your will and glorify your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Two weeks ago, our youths met together on Zoom for a church youth service. The most common response by everyone was that it was so good to be able to “see each other’s faces” again. By just seeing each other, even if only on video, and being able to worship and hear the sermon together was something encouraging and uplifting for everyone!

That got me reflecting on who we truly are as church. We all know that we are not so much a place but a people. But this truth is brought home much more strongly at this time. What we have missed is not only each other, but the “togetherness” of fellowship as an entire community. Many long for the opportunity to gather together again. This is the reality of who we are as God’s people – we are a living and vibrant community expressing ourselves in corporate worship – and nothing, not even a viral pandemic, can take us apart.

And at this weekend’s celebration of Pentecost, we are reminded of the Holy Spirit’s primary role of forming us as church. We are not just a social gathering but a real people conceived of and established by God. Which is why the Apostle Paul urges us in Ephesians 4:3 to “maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” This unity has been made possible and tangible not by our own actions but by the Holy Spirit.

Let us continue to rely on the Holy Spirit’s help not only to guard the unity that we have, but also to work actively to build up the community. We may not be able gather physically now, but we can still actively participate in the online services, the zoom cell and prayer meetings and even keep in contact with each other through our own initiative at this time. This is God’s way for us to continue to grow!
