2021 Event Trends, cont'd

Games can be a very effective way to engage people. Whether it is a trivia themed event, Jeopardy utilized for an educational event, or a reward to the first attendee to register, there are plenty of ways to gamify your events. Are you the type of person that is motivated by competition? Are there ways that you can incorporate gamification into your next event?
In order to make your attendees comfortable, consider varied seating types and arrangements. Yes, this could mean social distancing, but it could also mean smaller tables, so people only sit with the people they regularly come in contact with anyways. It could mean standing space for people who don’t want to sit for long periods of time and listen to conference speakers. Some people may be more comfortable in a lounge seating arrangement rather than at a table, or they might learn better if they can sit on something like a bean bag. Consider various ways of seating people, so they are not only more comfortable but they might learn better, too. Maybe even assign seating, so if people are leaving an area and coming back to that same room, you don’t have to sanitize everything again, and people can sit down in the same place. Assigned seating can be helpful if you want to strategically place sponsors in a certain area, or match attendees up intentionally. There are so many ways to seat people, so why stick to traditional tables and chairs all the time? What is your preferred seating type?
There are numerous things to consider when deciding if and how you’ll serve alcohol at your event, but you may start to see less open bars at professional and nonprofit events. Alcohol reduces inhibitions, so not only can it make for awkward conversations, it can lead to less social distancing and mask removal. I always recommend to clients that they control the flow of alcohol in some way, and I think this will start to be a bigger trend, whether that be with drink tickets or servers. As people are starting to be more conscious of their health, mocktails or low sugar options may start to gain popularity. While I enjoy a glass of wine, I do think event organizers should always carefully evaluate alcohol service, and always have a nonalcoholic option. What do you think?

In-Person Vendor vs. Event Sponsor

We're having quite a few conversations these days with potential vendors, sponsors, and event partners for in-person summer events. One thing that has come up as a few times in relation to registering as a vendor, is the fact that some companies are short staffed, don't want to pay staff to work an event, or corporately not allowed to participate in in-person events. One solution that we have found is in event sponsorship. The cost can be comparable or even less, especially when you consider the cost of paying staff for your vendor booth. We are in the position to be creative with our sponsorships, so one benefit of sponsorship can be a live video on social media or the opportunity to introduce a band, etc. These types of things still get a face from the company in front of attendees for a personal connection, but in combination with other marketing benefits to sponsorship, can also give your company some very valuable advertising, without the staff concerns. This is something to consider, and a topic where I would welcome further conversation.

This is a great opportunity for a current student or recent graduate looking for a career in marketing, public relations, events, and/or the communications field. This position is not for someone who is uncomfortable making phone calls, who cannot switch gears quickly, or who cannot work on multiple projects at once. This internship requires a candidate with confidence in interpersonal communication, excellent verbal and writing skills, a passion for creative design and excellent time management with the ability to multitask. The Intern’s role will be to support the Owner of Appleseed Events through event research, organization, and execution of event details as directed. Attendance at events is required.
