General Information

What is furlough?
Cadets take three extended furloughs each year — Thanksgiving (Nov. 24-28), Winter (Dec. 17 - Jan. 2), and Spring (March 5-13). Winter and Spring furloughs are mandatory, meaning campus will be closed during these periods and cadets must return home.

What is the furlough form?
The furlough form provides your cadet's planned pickup, flight, or MoX travel information to the commandant's department. For safety and tracking purposes, all families must complete the furlough travel form for each furlough to confirm cadet travel plans. If you have more than one cadet at MMA, please submit a new form for each cadet.

When should I submit the furlough form?
Prior travel arrangements for furlough can be planned as far ahead as you like, but they must be completed no later than ten days prior to the first day of furlough. This means you must submit the furlough form for Thanksgiving prior to November 14.

What happens if I choose to pick up my cadet early or return him late?
MMA sets furlough leave and return days/times in accordance with our academic calendar to best serve cadet learning. Early departures or late returns affect your cadet's class time, often interrupting key testing, and require additional MMA resources from the academic and commandant offices to accommodate his individual departure or return, including transportation, makeup missed work or tests, and more. For this reason, early departure and late arrival fees ($300) are assessed to his account when appropriate – excluding excused absences. Excused absences include family bereavement, health or medical concerns or appointments, etc. The commandant will review requests for excused absences.

Who should I contact with questions regarding travel to the airport or pick up from campus?
Please contact Transportation Specialist Mark Tompkins at (573) 253-1443. You can also email him at mark.tompkins@missourimilitaryacademy.com.

Who should I contact to coordinate alternate departure or return dates?
Please contact the Deputy Commandant Cadet Life Tom Roberts at 573-581-1776 ext. 436 or via email at Thomas.Roberts@missourimilitaryacademy.com

What should I do if my travel plans change after I submit the furlough form?
Submit another furlough form with the correct information, then contact Deputy Commandant Cadet Life Tom Roberts (see contact information above) to notify him of changes.

What are acceptable and unacceptable travel arrangements?
Cadets may not travel home or to the airport via Uber, Lyft, taxi, limousine, or any other private transportation service. However, they can...
  • Get picked up by a guardian or designated adult.
  • Go home with another cadet if written permission has been provided to MMA by both cadets' families.
  • Be transported to St. Louis or a designated airport via MMA's chaperoned transportation.
  • Travel to the St. Louis airport via MoExpress shuttle service
What is MoExpress (MoX) Shuttle Service?
  • MoX is a shuttle bus service that provides transportation from Kingdom City to the St. Louis Airport. You can visit their website here, or contact them info@moexpress.com.
  • If you choose to use MoX, MMA will transport your cadet to the MoX shuttle location in Kingdom City (about 20 minutes away). Please include all MoX travel information in your furlough form.
  • Please note, there will be a $60 MMA transportation fee to/from campus and Kingdom City.

Thanksgiving Furlough Information

When is Thanksgiving Furlough?
November 24-28, 2021.

Is this a mandatory leave?
No, cadets may remain on campus if desired. If your cadet will remain on campus from November 24-28, you will still need to fill out a furlough form for your cadet detailing that decision.

When can cadets sign out for pick-up from campus?
Cadets may sign out with their parents after classes on Tuesday, November 23.

When should I schedule my cadet's flight?
  • Going home, cadet flights should be scheduled for departure on Wednesday, November 24 between 12:00 (noon) and 6:00 PM.
  • Returning to campus, cadet flights should be scheduled to return on Sunday, November 28, 2021 no later than 4:00 PM.
When will my cadet arrive at the airport?
Transportation to the St. Louis airport will depart at 7:00 AM Wednesday, November 24, 2021. Buses will arrive at the airport at approximately 10:00 AM. Transportation to and from the Columbia Regional Airport and Mexico Airport will coordinate with flight schedules.

Returning to campus, when will my cadet get picked up from the airport?
Transportation from the St. Louis airport to MMA on Sunday, November 28, 2021 will depart at 3:00 and 5:00 PM. After that, cadets must use the MoExpress Shuttle from St. Louis to Kingdom City.

My cadet will fly as an unaccompanied minor and will need an MMA chaperone to take him to/pick him up at his gate. What steps do I need to take?
  • Returning home, an MMA chaperone will take your cadet to his gate upon arrival at the airport.
  • Returning to campus, MMA chaperons will not arrive at the airport until 10 AM. If your cadet is under 15 years old or needs an MMA chaperone, please schedule flights to arrive after 10 AM and before 5 PM.
  • Notify the airport (or list within your purchased tickets) that Missouri Military Academy Faculty will pick up your child. Do not list a specific MMA employee or director, as chaperones will vary.
  • Please note that an additional $100 will be assessed to your cadet's account for this.
