Welcome to Smashcut! A PSA Newsletter dedicated to giving you all the industry news in an entertaining and informative way. April showers may bring May flowers but nothing compares to what’s inside the latest edition of Smashcut! With the Oscars now in the rearview mirror, we can finally set our sights on what’s really important – summer blockbusters. It may only be Spring but we’re chomping at the bit to see what’s coming out for the summer. With that said, we have another outstanding newsletter this month – chock-full of great industry news and membership happenings. So get out your electronics and see all the great stuff this month’s issue has in store for you.

Our guest columnist this month, Chris LaMont (screenwriter/filmmaker and ASU film Professor), writes about the importance of properly formatting your screenplay.  Jessica Brown (PSA board member and screenwriter) will review the book Story: Substance, Structure, Style And The Principles of Screenwriting by Robert McKeel and Lovinder Gill (filmmaker and creator of Scriptcake podcast) discusses why stories run out of steam. Looking for good books on screenwriting? Jessica will give you the real deal on what books make the grade what ones don’t.

Her feature screenplay, Perfect Misfits, that she brought to the Actors Reading Writers event in September, won “Best First Time Feature Screenwriter” in the Content 2022 Film Festival and Media Summit Contest, and has been selected in several others that haven’t been announced yet. Baby steps! She also just learned her screenplay (which she brought to Actors Reading in September also won Best Screenplay and Best Writer in the Christian Online Film Festival. FADE IN: And now what?
By Chris LaMont

CA-CHUNK!

That is the sound of a 120-page spec screenplay that a writer spent hours, days, months and maybe years birthing from their creative ether – pulling the words straight out of their souls and onto the written page – forsaking family, friends, a social life, and a million other things that they could have done instead – all so they could tell their story to the world.
